The act of adding jam and cream to bread is said to have originated at Tavistock Abbey in Devon during the 11th century. Whilst nowadays the bread has been swapped with delicious freshly baked scones, one thing is for certain - if you're eating cream tea in Devon the cream goes before the jam!
