Our Favourite Cornish Businesses | St Piran's Day 2026

Our Favourite Cornish Businesses | St Piran's Day 2026

St Piran’s day, often referred to as “Cornwall Day”, is celebrated on 5th of March every year. Originally a day for celebrating Saint Piran (the patron saint of Cornwall and tin miners) the day has grown to reflect a much wider celebration of the cultural heritage of Cornwall.

To honour Cornwall’s big day, we’re shining a spotlight on some of our favourite Cornish businesses and their wonderful products, from Cornish pasties to crockery, chocolate to candles.

If, like us, you're passionate about British manufacturing, quality craftsmanship, and supporting small businesses- we're sure you'll love this line up...

Kernow Chocolate

Artisanal chocolate

As you might know, we are a family-run, independent business ourselves and, as such, we are incredibly passionate about the promotion of other similar businesses. Kernow Chocolate is exactly the type of business we love to see thrive- founded in 2005 by married couple Alex and Jayne Shapland, they are now Cornwall’s largest artisan chocolate maker.

Each and every chocolate product of theirs is handmade in small batches by skilled chocolatiers in their factory in St Eval, and you really can tell. Made from ethically sourced, single origin cocoa, Kernow Chocolate has that melt-in-the-mouth, velvety consistency- a truly decadent treat.

If we’re all being honest with ourselves, the high street chocolate brands aren’t what they used to be and it’s time for a change. Treat yourself (or someone you love!) to some proper Cornish chocolate and we promise you’ll taste the difference…

Roddas

Cornish Clotted Cream

If you’re from the UK, you have probably heard of Roddas. What you might not know is that they actually come from very humble origins- this Cornish clotted cream company was founded at a kitchen table (much like another small business we know!).

In 1890, Eliza Jane Rodda began making clotted cream in her farmhouse in Cornwall, and by 1920, her daughter-in-law Francis had developed a technique for preserving that same clotted cream recipe in glass jars, which allowed them to transport their produce to London. Their Cornish creation was soon picked up by the likes of Fortnum & Mason and Harrods, and the rest is history!

Five generations and 130 years later, Roddas is a hugely successful international business- still run by the Rodda family, using the very same recipe. You can browse their impressive range of Cornish dairy products and gift hampers on their website- perfect for Mother’s Day next weekend!

Our only gripe with Rhoddas is that they insist that jam goes before cream… but a Cornwall Day blog post probably isn’t the place to start that debate so we’ll let it slide.

Home County Co.

Cornwall-inspired home fragrance

Excuse the cheeky interlude because we aren’t a Cornish business ourselves, but it would be remiss of us not to take the opportunity to shout out our Cornwall Collection here.

If Cornwall holds a special place in your heart, or that of someone you love, then you absolutely must try our range of Cornish-inspired home fragrance products. Inspired by wondrous rockpools on the wild Cornish coast, The Cornwall is a Rock Salt & Driftwood scent.

The Cornwall is our bestselling scent for a reason; a fresh, coastal fragrance that feels like that first intake of fresh sea air when you finally reach the coast after a long drive.

Cornish Bakery

Bakeries

Founded in 1994 in the town of Mevagissey, Cornish Bakery is a family of artisan bakeries serving traditional, handmade Cornish bakes.

While the Cornish Bakery is home to an impressive range of patisserie, viennoiserie, and speciality coffee, it is (unsurprisingly) their award-winning Cornish pasties that steal the show. And, at risk of offending our Northern readership, their farmhouse sausage rolls have also been dubbed “one of the best” by Giles Coren of The Times Magazine.

I can personally vouch for most of the pasties in their portfolio, because they have a very dangerously-positioned bakery inside the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, right outside the hall that the Home County Co. were exhibiting in last autumn. I visited every day (sometimes twice a day but who’s counting) during that trade show and made my way through most of the bakes on offer.

Cornish Bakery have over 50 sites all over the UK, but if they don't have one near you, fear not, you can order their incredible Cornish pasties in packs of 10 on their website!

Cornishware

Kitchenware

For over a century, Cornishware have been creating their traditional striped kitchenware using clay from the Cornish coastal town of St Austell.

The origin story of Cornishware is a truly wonderful tale that any small business can draw inspiration from. First named T.G Green & Co., Cornishware was born out of a small craft pottery based in a Church in Derbyshire; the iconic blue and white stripes came later in the 1920s, inspired by the blue skies and white-crested waves of Cornwall.

There have been many iterations of Cornishware, as you may expect from a business that has traversed so many decades, but one thing that has always remained is their iconic striped design. As Marketing Director Rebecca Rickards told the Financial Times, “It was fashionable 50 years ago and I think it will be fashionable in 50 years”.

Cornishware is evidence that the appetite for British craftsmanship is stronger than ever. Head to their website to browse their ever-growing collection of striped ceramics, and don’t forget to check out their new Summer Rose shade!
