Best Independent Coffee Shops in Northamptonshire | County Café Series

Hi, I'm Lucy, Sales and Marketing Manager for the Home County Co., and my job takes me all over the UK, creating content and meeting with retailers. Naturally, this means that I've worked from my fair share of cafés along the way.

I'm also a trained barista with a passion for proper coffee, so you can trust me to sniff out the best speciality coffee each new county has to offer. I'll be travelling lots with work this year as we channel all of our efforts into growing the brand, so I thought it'd be a great time to start a County Café Series where I share with you my favourite finds and hidden gems in every county I visit!

This month, I'm starting a little closer to home and sharing my 3 favourite coffee shops in Northamptonshire...

Spread

Abington, Northampton

Founded in 2019 by Amy Adams, Spread specialise in delicious, freshly-made sandwiches and grazing tables.

Thanks to their wonderful all-women team, they went from strength to strength after opening the doors of their first sandwich shop in 2023.

By 2025, Spread was thriving, with a loyal community, a bestselling matcha menu, and even a monthly run club.

Their success came under threat in December of that year when a joy rider crashed a stolen car into their shop front, and Spread were forced to close their doors just days before Christmas due to structural damage and concerns for public safety.

Fortunately there is no one more resourceful than a small business owner in distress, and within the space of just 15 days Amy and her team had set up a temporary pop-up shop in their prep kitchen across the road.

"Life gave us lemons so we squeezed in to the prep kitchen" - Spread

2A Roe Road, NN1 4PJ

Fast forward 6 months, and they're still operating as a takeaway-only pop-up, but their community have rallied around them and they had a constant flow of customers on the morning I visited.

They use a number of local suppliers, including Bella Barista for their locally-roasted, organic coffee beans and Cookie Babes for their mouth-watering selection of loaded cookies.

I'm a bit of a coffee snob, I don't like any syrups or flavours in my coffee- just single origin, specialty coffee, usually an oat flat white.

I'm the same with matcha, I like a simple ceremonial grade matcha without any added flavours. That was, until I tried Spread's Kinder Bueno Iced Matcha Latte which, quite frankly, I have not stopped thinking about since.

Perhaps more of a dessert than a drink, but wow it was good.

If you're based in Northamptonshire and are looking for a new go-to coffee shop / matcha spot near Northampton town centre, give Spread a try!

Davey's

Quinton Green

One of Northamptonshire's newest additions, Davey's opened just two months ago and is already a roaring success.

Owned by 18-year-old Ciara Davey, the countryside café is nestled in rural Northamptonshire, less than two miles from Salcey Forest; the perfect location for local cyclists in need of a pit stop.

Ciara and her family transformed an old, disused horse stable into a purpose built kitchen and dining space. It feels stylish and modern, but they've also been careful to retain some of the building's original character by leaving beams and brick walls exposed, and repurposing some of the stable's original features as quirky light fittings.

Davey's has fast become one of my favourite coffee shops in Northants. Not only do they have a beautiful team and a stunning location, but their coffee is excellent too.

They serve Yellow Bourbon Coffee, which is roasted very locally on Angel Street in Northampton, as well as TikTok's favourite Perfect Ted matcha.

I tried their Italian focaccia and it was stunning! Mozzarella, pesto, sun-dried tomatoes, and fresh basil inside on homemade focaccia.

Next time you're near Hartwell / Quinton, pop into this family-run café...

Hidden Gem

Finedon (near Wellingborough)

Last but not least is Hidden Gem, arguably the most aesthetic coffee shop in Northamptonshire.

Inspired by the health food scene in Australia and New Zealand, Gemma Fowler founded Northamptonshire's first matcha and acai café in 2025.

Though they specialise in matcha, they also offer excellent specialty coffee and an incredible food menu.

I'd recommend their Spicy Tuna sourdough toastie if you're there over lunch time!
